Review - Heartless by Marissa Meyer
Long before she was the Queen of Hearts, Catherine Pinkerton was just a girl who wanted to fall in love.
Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next queen.
Then Cath meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the king and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship. Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.
Review
In a Kingdom of Hearts where all kinds of magical creatures are within normal humans, people live under the ruling of the young and childish, the King of Hearts. However, how can one rule a Kingdom on their own, with no one by their side? When Catherine, the daughter of the duke, brings self-baked cakes to the King's ball as baking is her hobby since little, her mother sees the opportunity for Cath to become his bride as he smiles while having a bite of the lemonade cake. The Queen of Hearts...
Who could have guessed things were going to turn around when the story had begun like a dreamy fairytale?
*****
Firstly I thought my opinion on this book would be biased as I was already a big lover of Alice in Wonderland and also a fan of Marrissa Meyer's books. Nonetheless, I was captivated by the twist of the original story and the different characters who appear in it, without being influenced by my previous interest. As dark as Alice in Wonderland by Tim Burton, Heartless paints a colorful scenery at first sight, but there's a shadow if there's a light, and this is the most interesting thing in Marissa's writing and version of the same tale.
Catherine, vivid and passionate, with dreams and hopes, will have to face the difficulties of being in a high-class position where prestige is put over love, and right when she thought none of that mattered to her, the Joker showed up at the King's ball. New and conflicting feelings will make her take chances and make decisions that could turn into her desired dream or her painful nightmare.
As for Jester, known as the court's Joker, and his companion Raven, surprises will take the laugh from their magic when matters of the heart are involved. A character whom I've fallen in love at the surprising speed of two pages, being the cause of smiles and butterflies in one's stomach, I would re-read this book for the sake of meeting him again.
Not only fantastic and magical, endearing but also extremely dark from the other side of the looking glass, Heartless is captivating and will make you suffer as it progresses, however also making you love and devour each page wanting to know what's going to happen on the next chapter (even if, in the end, you regret it).

9,5/10
I can't really give it a ten because, even though the way it ended was the right one, deep down, I was hoping for everything to get fixed and that left me a sour feeling.
Read you! Nym.
