Review The great gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgeralt
Nick
Carraway was born in the Middle West. His father and he went to Yale
at New Haven; Nick graduated at 1915 and then he went to fight in the
Great War. When he came back he couldn't settle
down
so he went to New York (1922, spring) (his father payed his expenses).
His
house was on a Long Island and he had a neightbough called 'Gatsby'.
Chapter
1: Tom and Daisy
Daisy is Nick's cousin. She
phoned and invited him to go to her house in East Egg. Nick went
there and meet Tom Buchanan (Daisy's husband) and Miss Baker (Jordan
Baker). He discovered that Tom had another woman in New York (Nick
didn't come to the wedding) and that Jordan (golf player) is an alone
nice girl. When he arrived to his home he saw Gatsby in the outside
looking at a green light.
Chapter 2: Myrtle Wilson
Tom and Nick went to meet
Myrtle, the Tom's mistress, in the garage of her husband George
Wilson. They decided to meet at New York so Tom and Nick took the
train. There Myrtle wanted to buy a dog (Tom payed for it) and all
they went to an apartment where they spent the night with the Knees
(neightbourghst) and Myrtle's sister (Catherine). Myrtle had changed
their clothes and personality before the people came.
At the end of the night she
started to annoy Tom so he hit her and her nose bled. Later Tom left
the apartment.
Chapter 3: I meet Gatsby
Nick went to a Gatsby's
party (he organised a lot each summer). In some parties he wasn't
present but in this one he met Nick and offered him to go the next
day, at nine o'clock, to do old sport with a motorboat. This night
Nick also saw Jordan, who discovered a Gatsby's secret.
Chapter 4: I have a lunch
with Gatsby
There was a lot of rumours
about Gatsby (he was a killer, a German spy, a bootleger,...) but any
of them seemed the truth. Gatsby, one day, stood at Nick's door with
his yellow and silver car inviting him to have lunch together. He
told his live to Nick; he was son of a rich dead family in San
Francisco, then he went to Oxford where he was educated. He travelled
around Europe and spent lots of money to forget something bad; also
he was in the War and won some medals.
At the café Nick met Mr
Meyer Wolfsheim a Gastby's friend (he was well-known in Broadway
because he was a criminal).
Later Nick saw Tom and
talked to him (he was angry due to Nick didn't answer Daisy calls),
but Gatsby had already left.
Chapter 5: Daisy and Gatsby:
Start of the dream
Jordan (bridesmaid in Tom's
wedding) told Nick that Daisy hangued out with Gatsby five years
before. She used to hang out with a lot of officers but she fell in
love with him. Unfortunetly he had to leave and she got married with
Tom. Before the wedding day Jordan found Daisy completely drunk with
a letter in her hand and the collar's Tom on the floor. She and
Daisy's mother maid took her into a cold bath; the next day she
seemed happy so the wedding went on and they went on their honeymoon.
A week later Tom and a girl crashed the car and the story got into
the papers.
In April Daisy had a child
(girl).
Gatsby celebrated all these
parties because he had hope to see her again (he stood every night
looking that green light because he could see Daisy's house); here is
the favour he want from Nick, he had to invite Daisy to drink tea.
Chapter 6: Daisy comes to
tea
Daisy came to drink the tea
and surprisingly she met Jay Gatsby. They spent all the afternoon
together, laugthing a lot and speaking too. In Gatsby's desk there
was a photo about Mr Dan Cody who was like a Jay's father and used to
be his best friend too. (he died). Nick wanted to ask more but they
decided to play the piano.
Chapter 7: Gatsby's last
party
People continue talking
rumours about Gatsby. At the last party Tom and Daisy came and she
spent all night dancing and talking to Jay. Tom didn't care owing to
he found another girl, but when they were waiting for the car he
started wondering about the secrets that Jay could hide. At the end
Nick talked to Jay, and he said that he wanted to marry Daisy, to
live happy with her; Gatsby wanted Daisy to divorce Tom.
Chapter 8: The hottest day
of the summer
After the Gatsby's parties
had ended, he sent his servants away because Daisy visited him every
afternoon. One day they all went to Daisy's house to have dinner and
Tom realised that his wife was in love with other man. They decided
to go out with the cars and Tom stopped at Wilson's garage to buy
some gas. There George told him that they will leave the place, so
Tom was losing his wife and mistress as the same time. They went to a
hotel to have a drink but there they had an argument and Daisy said
to Tom that she didn't love him in these moment, she was in love with
Jay; but this didn't mean that she did never love Tom. He said bad
things about Gatsby (he had killed a man) so Daisy seemed sad.
(It was Nick's 38 birthday)
Chapter 9: Death in the
evening
Myrtle died in a car
accident. Her husband locked her in the bathdroom for hours when he
realised that she had a lover. When she got out of there she stood in
the middle of the road and a yellow car didn't stop at time, Daisy
was driving and she killed Wilson's wife.
Jay appeared in Tom's house
to saw if everything was okay. Nick took a taxi and went home.
Chapter 10: The end of a
dream
Gatsby went home when he was
completely sure that Daisy didn't need anything. The next morning
Nick recommended him to go away but Jay didn't wanted it.
Wilson went to Jay's house
and shot him and later shot himself. Nick tryed to contact Mr and Mrs
Buchanan but they left the house without leaving any adress; he wrote
a letter to Meyer but he answer that he couldn't go to the funeral or
visit the house.
The police found out that
his real name was James Gatz and that he was son of a poor farmer's
family; he got later a job in Cody's yacht. Only the father (Henry
Gatz), the fat man with glasses that was in the library and Nick went
to the funeral.
Chapter 11: I go back to the
West
Before Nick went to the West
he had seen Tom for the last time. He discovered that Tom said to
Wilson who was the owner of the yellow car, but also found out that
Tom didn't know that was Daisy who drove the car.
